Summary

The Tiger tank endures today as the greatest legend of the German armored forces of World War II. Weighing in at 55 tons, the armored behemoth marked a new chapter in the history of armored warfare. Whereas previous German tanks, the Marks I through V, had taken a regular place in panzer units, the new Tiger (theoretically a Mark VI) was allocated to specially created battalions, intended to achieve a battlefield breakthrough. The Tiger's greatest moments were on the Eastern Front, where for most of the war only the Soviet up-gunned KV series had any chance in a tank-to-tank encounter.

Jean Restayn's text is backed up by 250 photographs, most of them never published before, and 50 color plates showing markings, insignia and camouflage schemes. Also included is a complete operational history and order of battle for all units, both Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS, who were equipped with the Tiger.

Author Biography

Jean Restayn, who contributes to 'Militaria Magazine' and 'Steelmasters', two of Histoire and Collection's wide range of magazines, is a renowned illustrator, specializing in AFVs of the world wars. His knowledge of tank camouflage and markings is compounded by his pictorial talents.
