Summary

When Time magazine was founded in 1923, it aimed to offer readers a fresh new way to understand world events. In that spirit, and in celebration of Time's 80th anniversary, the editors have created a thought-provoking experiment with history. The challenge: to choose the 80 most influential events of the past eight decades: 80 Days That Changed the World. The result is a fascinating and surprising look at the recent past. Some of the turning points selected for this list are part of our permanent mental calendars. Dec. 7, 1941, and Nov. 22, 1963, immediately conjure up a host of associations, even for those who did not experience firsthand the shock of the Pearl Harbor attack or John F. Kennedy's assassination. The date Sept. 11, 2001, has now joined this category, its events forever seared into our memories. Perhaps the most fascinating dates and events, however, are those that may have seemed unremarkable at the time but proved in the long run to be of major importance. Nov. 24, 1989, for instance, brings up no particular associations -- yet it is the day Osama bin Laden ascended to the top position in the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
