Summary

Acting in the Name of the War on terrorism, President George W. Bush led the U.S. into a campaign against Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein in 2003. The bold decision divided the American people; it also split the U.S. from the United Nations and several longtime allies. Saddam's regime toppled quickly, but Americans soon found that "peace is hell," as the major conflict gave way to a guerrilla war that claimed more U.S. lives than the initial assault. The limitations of power were all around us in 2003. The fragility of technology was underscored in February, when the U.S. space shuttle Columbia came apart as it returned to Earth, killing seven astronauts. In August the largest electrical blackout in history plunged major cities into darkness, though it ended up illuminating the new civility of urban life.
