Summary

"My reality often involves railroad subjects. Railroad places are a significant part of the landscape and the reason much of the country looks the way it does. The American place is often a railroad place, manmade and human scale - urban, industrial, or rural. So I'm a realist. I work to have my paintings take on a life of their own. I think of them as small fictions, part of a narrative, set in place and time, with my own sense of reality to bring them off. If I'm able to set the contextual stage well enough, viewers can see the play or experience my reality as akin to their own." - Ted RoseIndiana University Press is proud to present a selection of some of the best paintings of water colourist Ted Rose. His elegant work has appeared in numerous exhibitions, books, calendars, and distinguished private collections. He is known to fine art collectors for his magnificent portrayals of twentieth-century American landscapes and industrial culture. In the Traces brings together sixty of his best paintings focusing primarily on railroads and railroading with special emphasis on the age of steam. The work is presented in six parts: Yard Work, Night Moves, Tuesday's Just as Bad, On the Road, Railroad Places, and Revival. Rose begins each section with an introduction explaining his artistic motivations and purposes and adds a brief comment - again from his perspective as an artist - about each of the paintings. Their names - Rose believes that paintings should have a name - echo his inspiration: Ode to a Hostler, Yard Crew, Flying White, Mousing for Switchpoints, Cooked Cabbage and Coal Smoke, Hot Rail, Out of Danville, The Last Great Race, Sandhill Country, Shenango River Crossing, On the Rat Hole, Powder River Vignette
