This innovative collection of essays examines, through a range of ethnographic and comparative studies, the transnational movements, effects, and transformations of religion in the contemporary world and offers a fresh perspective on the interrelation between globalization and religion. Taken as a whole, Transnational Transcendence challenges some widely accepted ideas about this relationship-in particular, that international contemporary religious manifestations are secondary to the primarily economic phenomenon of globalization. Author Biography

Thomas J. Csordas is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, San Diego. He is the editor of Embodiment and Experience and author of Language, Charisma, and Creativity; The Sacred Self; and Body/Meaning/Healing.
