Summary

No other movement has had as great an impact on art in the last 200 years, nor been as popular with museum goers, as the Impressionists. But the road to acceptance was long and hard. This breathtaking oversize volumefilled with fabulous facsimile artifactslooks at the journey these great painters endured to establish themselves in the art world and gain the respect of critics and public alike. Follow the path of the Impressionists from the early encounters between such luminaries as Monet, Renoir, Manet, Degas and Bazille as they converged on Paris to study at the academies, to their first exhibitions, to the later landscapes and portraits, This beautifully illustrated book places the art in its historical context, analyzes the techniques, focuses on the major painters and on the female Impressionsists, explains how their work influenced later generations, and even reveals the artists' loves and personal battles. This is a must-have anthology for any art lover. The amazing memorabilia includes: - A permit issued to Gustave Courbet during the time of the Paris Commune - Newspaper reviews - Extracts from Manet's and Sisley's sketchbooks - Renoir's palette list - An article by Charles Baudelaire on the Impressionists - Plus: posters, cartoons, illustrated letters, sketches and preparatory drawings, catalogue excerpts, photographs and more!
