Asger Jorn (1914–1973) was a Danish artist who, until 1964, worked exclusively with collages. He then made a complete about-face: from 1964 to 1969, he created a series of “décollages.” For these works, he removed already existing material instead of adding it. He this new technique first on billboards and advertising pillars, using a knife or tearing sections of the layered posters with his bare hands, thus creating new pictorial surfaces and compositions. This catalog presents these groups of works, which are inextricably tied to each other within Asger Jorn’s oeuvre as a whole.
