Centrifugal pumps are not complicated machines. Often they consist of a few castings that are pierced by a number of wrought parts. Despite the simplicity of this ubiquitous machine, it is still capable of posing quite complex problems during its operation. The hydraulic influence of the associated piping system is often less than obvious and adds a further dimension to this complexity. Modern cost constraints have more and more lead pump plant designers to contemplate departures from established practice with the result that old lessons are having to be re-learnt.
