Mary-Kate & Ashley Sweet 16 #16: Truth or Dare
(Truth or Dare)

Chapter One

"Listen up, class. I have a special project for you!" my social studies teacher, Ms. Hahn, announced on Monday morning, as she picked up a stack of papers from her desk.

My mouth dropped open in shock as everyone around me groaned. "A project?" I whispered across the aisle to my sister, Ashley.

"She's kidding," Ashley replied, her eyes even wider than mine. "She has to be kidding."

"She seems pretty dead serious to me," our friend Brittany Bowen pointed out.

I opened my notebook and sighed, slumping a little. It was only a few weeks until Christmas vacation. I had been expecting nothing but simple assignments and easy quizzes leading up to our break. That was how it had worked every other year. But a "special project"? That sounded like a major chore.

"Shh! You guys! Maybe it won't be that bad," Lauren Glazer said with that ever-peppy smile of hers.

I swear, Lauren could be happy in the middle of an earthquake.

"I think you're really going to like this one," Ms. Hahn said, walking along the front of the room and handing a few sheets to the first person in each row. I sat up straighter trying to catch a glimpse of the assignment as it was passed back.

"For the next few weeks, all of you will be going to college!" Ms. Hahn announced.

Suddenly my heart skipped in excitement. I glanced at Ashley. Going to college? That didn't sound like work, it sounded like fun! I grabbed the last two papers from John Kline and handed one back to Lauren. I couldn't stop grinning as I scanned the page.

ASSIGNMENT. WHAT'S COLLEGE LIFE
REALLY LIKE?

"This is so cool," Ashley said, not even bothering to whisper.

"I know," I replied giddily. "Now I'm glad she wasn't kidding!"

"The University of California at Malibu has agreed to let all of you join their freshman class for the next few weeks so that you may complete this assignment," Ms. Hahn said, pushing her glasses up on her nose. "Instead of your classes here, you'll be spending your days on campus. At this moment, you hold a list of potential projects. Each one of you will choose a specific aspect of college life to explore, then you'll write a report about your experiences. You must choose from this list, so think carefully. Make sure you pick something you're interested in. Or something you've always wanted to try."

"This is amazing," Lauren whispered. "Look! You can assistant-direct a college play at the student Performing Arts Center. I'm so doing that!"

"You can take a whole class in American cinema?" Brittany asked, running her finger down the list. "Do you think you get to just watch movies all the time? College is the best!"

Everyone was chatting excitedly around me as I quickly scanned the list. There had to be something cool for me to do, and I wanted to find it before someone else snatched it up.

Get a work-study job in the cafeteria, I read silently. No thanks. Rush a sorority/fraternity. Not my style. Study human anatomy in a premed class. No way, no how.

But then I found it. The absolute perfect assignment: Work on the daily campus newspaper and have an article printed ...
