Summary

This provocative book draws on Erving Goffman's theories of the "presentation of self" to examine the racial attitudes and behaviors of whites toward blacks in the United States today. Basing their arguments on extensive research into a wide range of materials, including over 600 journals of racial events kept by white college students across America, the authors conclude that racism is alive and well, but that it exists primarily behind the scenes, or "backstage," in the company of other whites.
