He joined the Navy to go to sea and, with the reception of a short break to learn how to brew Guinness, he has remained on or around the sea ever since. A professional navigator, he has travelled to most parts of the world during his career, commanding two submarines and a frigate. Until recently, he was in charge of Portsmouth Naval Bast - a post that includes the custody of the Eastern Solent.
He is an enthusiastic yachtsman who can think of no better way of spending a weekend than drifting around in his boat, Snow Goose.
