Summary

In the past 20 years, Asia has experienced tremendous economic growth, an expansion of democratic institutions and relative peace. Although several countries suffered economic upheavals in the late 90s, most have recovered, with the notable exception of Indonesia.

But serious problems could arise in a number of countries: between India and Pakistan, China and Taiwan, in Indonesia or the Korean peninsula. The authors examine future directions for the region, and offer alternatives for adapting United States strategy.
