Summary

U.S. Energy Imperatives for the 1990s provides both an integrated package of recommendations for U.S. energy policy and expert background papers on the environment, energy efficiency, and energy supply development. It concludes with an essay on the critical leadership role which must be played by the United States if energy is to be responsibly used in helping to assure sustainable economic development. The policy recommendations, which were developed by some fifty experts from business, labor, the media, academia, and governments, stress the need for efficient use of energy, aggressive environmental action, and responsible and timely resource development. The book presents informative chapters on the need for long-term dedication to environmental excellence and the promising record of and outlook for energy efficiency. The outlook for energy supply-demand, and perspectives on liquid fuel supplies are next discussed. Differing viewpoints on governmental policies to assure an efficient and reliable electric generation are presented as well as the environmental issues associated with electricity generation and future prospects for nuclear power. Co-published with the Atlantic Council of the United States.
