Summary

The USS Flier: Death and Survival on a World War II Submarine covers one of the most astonishing stories of World War II, documenting the life-or-death struggle of eight men who escaped when their submarine sank after striking a mine on August 13, 1944. After swimming to a remote island controlled by the Japanese, the crew fought to survive behind enemy lines without food or water. The seemingly unlucky Flier only completed one full patrol of the Pacific, attacking enemy shipping from Pearl Harbor to Fremantle, Western Australia. The eight sailors who survived became the first Americans of the Pacific war to escape from a sunken submarine and return safely to the United States. Noted historian Michael Sturma brilliantly recounts a harrowing story of brave men who lived to return to the service of their country, and sheds light on the sacrifice and heroism exhibited by the remarkable individuals involved in the Pacific War. Book jacket.
