Summary

The multidisciplinary aesthetics of Walter Pater, the nineteenth century's most provocative critic, are explored by an international team of scholars. True aesthetic criticism takes place working across the arts, Pater insists: acknowledging the differences between media, but seeking possibilities of interconnection.

Author Biography

ELICIA CLEMENTS, who teaches in English and the Humanities at York University, Canada, approaches Pater as a proto-modernist. She has published on the performative interchange between words and music in the Stein-Thomson operas, and the musical connections between Virginia Woolf and Ethel Smyth. Currently, she is finishing a book-length study of the relationships among language, music, and sound in Woolfs novels.

LESLEY HIGGINS, who specializes in late Victorian and Modernist literature, gender studies, and poetry, is Professor of English at York University, Canada, and is author of The Modernist Cult of Ugliness (2002), editor of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Oxford Essays and Notes (2006), co-general editor of The Collected Works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, and co-editor of Walter Pater: Transparencies of Desire (2002).
