Summary

Can civilisation survive the 21st century? Professor Ian Lowe, author ('The Big Fix', 'Living in the Hothouse'), pre-eminent scientist, environmentalist, cultural commentator and president of the Australian Conservation Foundation, thinks we have a chance, but we have to act now, across the board. Here, collected together for the first time, are Lowe's views on the environment, culture, science, politics, education, technology and Australia's economy, along with new pieces on Copenhagen 2009 and Australia's chance for survival in this new century. Written in Lowe's accessible style, this engaging and informative collection of essays and opinion pieces illustrate the topics that have engaged the Australian community and continue to do so into the uncertain future. Lowe is a purveyor of common sense, clarity and fact. He is the voice of reason, and this collection is an environmental and community call to arms through logic rather than fear-mongering. Read it to be better informed, to be challenged and to make a difference.
