Summary

A young brave awakens one morning and finds a strange storm raging outside his lodge. It passes quickly but has left his home changed. A memory from the past of his grandfather’s battle with a Great Bear and eventually his death returns. He finds that his hearing has been taken from him and a hawk is beckoning him to follow his lead across the valley to a faraway bluff. As his walk takes him farther from the he way used to live, he must overcome many fears. He must learn to listen to animals, plants, dreams, and himself. They teach him to listen, not to simply hear. The Great Bear, White Buffalo Calf Woman, the Eagle, the Coyote, and each of the Four Directions all show him the ways of the Great Spirit and the ways of nature.
