Francis Naumann's text in this survey of Putnam's career traces the artist's life and offers an analysis of his work. Illustrating this book are not only 225 reproductions but also many portraits and informal snapshots made by Putnam's wife, the important photographer Consuelo Kanaga. She documented the evolution of many of his works as well as moments in their private lives in New York City and at their Westchester home, a converted icehouse in Yorktown Heights.
