Summary

No single volume can provide a definitive history of an institution as significant and complex as the U.S. Military Academy, and this volume makes no pretense of doing so. Rather, its purpose is to survey the highlights of that history, with particular emphasis on the salient trends and personalities of West Point's second century. The chapters offer glimpses of the environment and internal workings of the Academy, but overall they underscore West Point's influence on the American military establishment and the institution's connection to American society.
