Excerpts

Excerpts from The Words of African-American Heroes:

"Believe me, most people resist change, even when it promises to be for the better. But change will come, and if you acknowledge this simple but indisputable fact of life, and understand that you must adjust to all change, then you will have a head start." —Arthur Ashe

"I guess what everyone wants more than anything else is to be loved. And to know you loved me for my singing is too much for me. Forgive me if I don’t have the words. Maybe I can sing and you’ll understand." —Ella Fitzgerald

"I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me. I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life. As I see it today, the ability to read awoke in me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive." —Malcolm X
