Summary

A study of the attempt by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union to create proactive acquiescent citizens amongst the Muslim Uzbek and Central Asian peoples of Uzbekistan. The focus of this book is Soviet youth movements in Uzbekistan 1924-1991 - with an emphasis upon the 1980s. The two youth movements are the Young Pioneers and the Komsomol. The intention of the CPSU was to establish a Soviet people from amidst diversity and plurality consisting of loyal workers with a shared ideological consciousness. In this book I examine how the Communist Party sought to achieve mass compliance from the people of Uzbekistan through a mix of state-civic socialization channels and values and the benefits of material social development and the promotion of a national culture. A key partner in this process were the socialization channels of schools and colleges, civic ceremonies, youth movements, and physical culture. In light of the historical events I will explain the significance of youth movements as core Soviet state socialization channels and citizenship education in Uzbekistan, analyze the phenomenon of Soviet state-civic identity amongst the Uzbeks and highlight the function of state-civic values and norms in cementing compliance and common purpose.
