What is the meaning of Zen' In the simplest of terms, Zen is the return to the normal condition of body and mind; an awakening Shakyamuni Buddha achieved 2500 years ago while sitting in zazen posture. Today, the words of Buddha have as much resonance as they did then. Based on lived experience, Buddha's zazen teachings speak a universal language-that human beings, learning to understand the cause of their suffering, can be freed from it, thereby attaining supreme wisdom and freedom and an openness to the good of all. Accompanying the beautiful illustrations of Japanese art are popular Zen koans (parables), and haikus. In beautifully spare language, they distill the ancient wisdom of the Zen masters, promoting the rediscovery of a balanced, fearless, and active mind.
