Summary

This book focuses on the stories of Syrians who have found refuge in Wales, based on their own oral testimonies. They were recorded as part of a research project undertaken by Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales. Moving away from their home country has resulted in a break from their past lives and a rupture from their histories and cultures. One of the aims of the project was to help them connect their past to their present and give them a sense of belonging. Their histories are now part of Welsh history.

Author Biography

Originally from Iraq, Abdullah moved to the UK in 2009 for her doctorate in Women's Studies at the University of York. Her research focuses on Iraqi women's narratives of war, displacement and exile. As a former refugee herself her role on the Refugee Wales project has been to record and document the oral histories of Syrian refugees in Wales. Weedon is a Professor Emerita at Cardiff University directing the Centre for Critical and Cultural Theory. She was involved in Butetown History & Arts Centre for 26 years and has worked on many community based oral history projects with people from minority communities. Thomas worked for Amgueddfa Cymru for over forty years. Her role as Keeper of History and Archaeology allowed her to play a key part in the redevelopment of St Fagans as a National Museum of History. As a long-standing trustee and former chair of the Oral History Society she has trained people from all over Wales to collect and archive oral history.
