Rebekah Hutchinson and Joshua Ryan grew up together in 18th-century Hillsborough, North Carolina. Though they've been inseparable since childhood, their relationship is threatened when they realize, at the onset of the Revolutionary War, their feelings may be deeper than friendship. The situation becomes more complicated when they find themselves on opposite sides. Joshua, a patriot warrior, is willing to sacrifice everything for liberty. Rebekah, a Tory who calls George Washington's revolutionaries a band treasonous rebels, is against the fight for independence.Joshua is crushed when he learns that Rebekah is an enemy spy. Though she is committed to the British cause, she struggles as she begins to realize that her heart belongs to Joshua. Both stubborn, neither is willing to admit that their love is more important than their political beliefs.To further complicate matters, Rebekah's father begins a campaign to marry her off in an attempt to curb her willfulness and to prevent her from being hanged for treason. After much searching, her father chooses Joshua as the perfect match.Though she pretends to change her ways, Rebekah continues to work against her husband's cause until she discovers that Joshua's father is targeted for assassination. She is forced to work as a double agent in order to save her father-in-law without giving away the truth to her husband. Will her efforts be too little, too late?
