Excerpts

For a dental hygiene student to become a quality oral health care professional, it is essential to master the basic concepts offered in the dental hygiene curriculum. The intent of this text is to review those basic concepts in a clear, concise manner, using an outline format. This review is not intended to be the sole body of knowledge for dental hygiene, but rather to emphasize the fundamental aspects of dental hygiene education. To introduce the process of National Board Examination testing, our introductory chapter addresses practical information about study strategies and methods to develop a positive attitude and overcome test anxiety.Several important features support the strength of this review. The variety of multiple choice questions provides typical stand-alone and case-based questions, as well as more in-depth, thought-provoking questions that allow readers to demonstrate learning and understanding. Rationales are provided, explaining both correct and incorrect answers. In addition, references for each chapter are provided at the end of the book.Using a different approach to address special needs patients, we have included this subject material in most of the chapters, as well as in the case studies. In addition, we combined the subjects Patient Assessment and Preventive Dentistry. This will enhance learning and develop perspectives by combining disciplines and capturing the interrelationships of these subjects. As an added feature, the companion CD-ROM embellishes the text by offering additional cases and enough stand-alone questions to simulate a mock National Board Examination. A glossary is also included in the CD-ROM as a quick reference to key words and their meanings. We hope that this text benefits the readers by helping them to successfully complete a major milestone in their lives--passing National Boards and starting a professional career in dental hygiene.
