Summary

Burying the 20th Century challenges the central tenets of modernity -- a worldview that permeates the fabric of global industrial society. This provocative and challenging book asks readers to pause for breath, to contemplate the possibility of a more sustainable, humane and ecologically aware society, and to reject one that unthinkingly rushes forward in pursuit of limitless economic and technological growth. The authors explore a new way of organising human interactions and interdependencies, one which restores meaning and dignity to our lives.

Author Biography

Richard David Hames is a corporate philosopher, futurist and composer. After a distinguished career in academia, he was appointed Group Chief Executive to ArtsMedia International in London. Transforming an almost bankrupt business into one of Europe's most dynamic media corporations, he earned an enviable reputation as an effective transformative leader. Subsequently, Richard guided the Australian Film, Television and Radio School through a period of fundamental change to the very forefront of current educational and management practice. Richard is the author of the highly acclaimed book The Management Myth, the co-founder of Australian Business Network, Chairman of the Hames Group, and an international authority on strategic management, organisational ecology and systemic development. An adviser to successful corporations and mentor to influential business leaders, he has been honoured with many awards. These include a French Government Scholarship, a Leverhulme European Fellowship, the Mondadori Professorial Fellowship and the inaugural Lord Attlee Fellowship. Geraldene Callanan trained in Mass Communications and English Literature at Macquarie University, before becoming a social ecologist, researcher and consultant to some of Australia's leading organisations. Geraldene was the co-editor of 'The Hames Report' and, in 1995, she co-founded JOGE Research, which provides applied social and ecological research. Her interest in communications, cultural studies, ecology, and, in particular, social behaviour, have guided much of her working life. Geraldene's career has been founded on a fundamental belief in people and the need to engage them in the creation of sustainable futures.
