Summary

The average professional athlete sustains approximately two injuries per year. Not only do these injuries incur primary treatment costs, but significant secondary costs also arise due to lost productivity and absence from work. The most common sports-related injuries involve the muscles. Injuries of the skeletal muscles are often underestimated, misinterpreted, and improperly treated. Lack of training and continuing education in this area, a lack of research, the so far absence of a practical, comprehensive, universal classification system for muscle injuries and even a lack of uniform terminology. No real standards have been established for clinical or imaging diagnosis and treatment so far .In the past, the specialized knowledge necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of muscle injuries could be garnered only from individual publications. There was no textbook offering a comprehensive, understandable description of the anatomy and physiology of the skeletal muscles, the clinical diagnosis, imaging, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of muscle injuries. The editors of this book, H.-W. Mller-Wohlfahrt, P. Ueblacker, L. Hnsel, and B. Garrett, as well as the contributing authors have had decades of practical experience in caring for thousands of professional and amateur athletes. The editors organized a consensus conference in May 2011, in which a unified classification system and terminology were agreed on. An article on this is being published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, with reference to our book. Our book is the first comprehensive monograph on muscle injuries in the international literature, written by practitioners for practitioners! Medical care providers in professional and amateur sports are confronted daily with a range of problems. It is important in this setting to recognize complaints, disorders, and injuries and interpret them correctly. Muscle injuries pose a special challenge because of their heterogeneity and the frequency of borderline cases that are initially difficult to assess. Competence is essential, because the initial assessment of the extent of the injury is usually critical in determining the future course. His book will help the practitioner to gain the necessary confidence in dealing with muscle injuries and achieve faster treatment results. Practice-oriented content with a scientific foundation---conveys basic principles along with the most important diagnostic methods and treatment options. A unique and comprehensive classification of muscle injuries lets you sort through treatment options quickly and confidently. Benefit from many practical tips drawn from the authors wealth of experience. Illustrative case reports help you recognize pitfalls and high-risk situations. Written by an expert team of authors headed by the trusted physician for many top athletes. User-friendly design: Four-color layout and didactic structure to facilitate learning More than 500 vivid illustrations with over 150 explanatory diagrams Key information highlighted in color boxes Dr. Mueller-Wohlfahrt enjoys a highly respected worldwide reputation in sports medicine circles.
