Summary

This introductory book examines the work of ethnic writers, and the cultural contexts, and literary traditions in which their work is situated. The book is divided into four sections--African American, Asian American, Chicano/a, and Native American--each of which offer an overview of the tradition, a discussion of critical theoretical issues, and essays on individual novels. Discussed are the works of Toni Morrison, Sherman Alexie, Sandra Cisneros, and Maxine Hong Kingston, among others.

Helena Grice is Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Wales, Aberystwth.

Candida Hepworth is Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Wales, Swansea.

Maria Laudet is Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Sussex.
