Carstens is a professor of Afrikaans linguistics and current director of the School of Languages at North-West University–Potchefstroom. John Linnegar is immediate past chairman of the Professional Editors’ Group in South Africa and is an associate of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders in the United Kingdom.
