Summary

The cave temple of Longmen is situated in the southern part of the city of Luoyang in Henan Province, along the banks of the River Yi, where it flows between high cliffs on either side -- a spot called Longmen, or dragon gate. The carvings in the Buddhist caves of Longmen were begun in A.D. 493 when the Emperor Xaio Wen Di moved his capital to Luoyang. The work continued until at least the beginning of the Song Dynasty. There are 2,345 caves at Longmen, with 750 niches, 40 small carved pagodas, over 97,000 statues and more than 3,500 inscriptions.
