Summary

This authoritative and scientific reference compiles all of the historical landmarks in the constitutional development of Mauritius. The first volume describes the French and British colonial periods and the eventual creation of an elective constitution, along with the demographic changes on the island and the political participation of the Indians and descendants of slaves. It also introduces Dr. Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and the first Consultative Committee. Volume II depicts how Dr. Ramgoolam lead a new battle against the conservative and sectarian-minded members in the second Consultative Committee and ultimately paved the way for a democratic constitution for the colony.
