We are given one free gift at birth—our innocence, which is played out through childhood. In today’s high-tech society where too much information is easily obtainable, children are losing this gift far too soon. Look at today’s headlines: Columbine,” VA Tech,” Cleveland,” and Omaha.” Do we blame the disturbed youth, the parents, or both? This is a story of two extremes—excessive overindulgence and none. Neither is a solid foundation to prepare youngsters to live productively in the adult world. Caught between these excesses and dysfunctional adults is a small four-year-old boy, walking on a tightrope of insecurity. The novel is told from several first person observations, as well as the young boy’s, along with his interactions with his conflicted adult brother, who is struggling to gain a sense of normalcy—only to be met with intolerance from his neighbors—a precursor of today’s headlines.
