The revolutions of the late eighteenth century in North America and then France had a profound effect on world politics at the time -- and the echoes still reverberate today. The independence sought by Britain's North American colonies was primarily financial and the republic that arose was not dominated by a single man but by a constitution that gave every citizen freedom. In France things couldn't have been more different.
