Summary

On a daily basis, providers in prehospital care are charged with complex medical decision-making, procedurally, logistically and clinically, in often volatile or time-sensitive conditions. The authors of Avoiding Common Prehospital Errorshave attempted to compile evidence-based practice coupled with well-earned experience and best practices opinion. It follows a similar format in content organization as that used in the popular Avoiding Common Error Series. The book consists of a compendium of commonly made errors in the prehospital emergency setting. A short declarative sentence is used to state the error, which is then followed by a 1- to 3-page write-up discussing the "hows" and 'whys" of the error and what can be done avoid committing this error before it happens. The pearls that are highlighted within the text function as a valuable resource for both novice and veteran providers. The book focuses on core "high impact" areas of prehospital medicine such as airway management, cardiac arrest, and respiratory and traumatic emergencies. It also further enhances the authors' goal to provide safety to each and everyone of the patients. A deeper understanding of common patient presentations will ideally result in best practices and, hopefully, an avoidance of "common errors."
