Summary

If journeying is at the heart of lives as believers, then hope is bread for that journey. In this book, author John Indermark pushes past otherworldly interpretations of hope to consider a hope that provokes, perturbs, and penetrates to the most vulnerable core of faith. He holds in tension contradictory notions of hope, reminding us how hope is both our future expectation and our present reality; that it is a risky gamble and conscious choice; that it is the home we long for and the place that is already ours within God's gracious realm. Nine chapters invite the reader to consider scripture alongside stories from fellow faith sojourners. An appendix to the book provides a complementary process of spiritual exercises, offering the challenge to move beyond considering hope as a topic to embracing it as an action and a choice. At the center of this encounter with hope is community. Through the stories of faith ancestors and fellow pilgrims we come to see the hard work of hope-our call to speak for justice and effect change. Optional facilitation suggestions for small groups help take the reading one step further so that participants can explore their own questions about hope in a communal context where all are bound together by the God who gathers all and makes things new.
